Hanakago Bamboo Basket, Japan 20th Century

A singular object with a century of quiet presence. This Hanakago — literally "flower basket" — is a traditional Japanese bamboo vessel used in the practice of Ikebana, the art of flower arrangement. Woven in Japan in the 20th century, it carries the refined restraint that defines the finest examples of this form.

Its dramatically tall, narrow silhouette (H 22" x W 4") is designed to elevate a single stem or spare arrangement, drawing the eye upward and commanding space without demanding it. The aged bamboo has developed a warm, honeyed patina that no new object can replicate.

Equally at home as a functional vessel or a sculptural presence on a shelf, mantle, or table. A found object in the truest sense — irreplaceable, and not coming back.
