Vintage Kars Rug with Dramatic Medallion, Turkey, 20th Century
Woven in the Kars region of Eastern Turkey during the mid-20th century, this vintage Anatolian rug is a masterclass in bold geometry and tribal symbolism. At the heart of the composition lies a richly articulated central medallion, bracketed by angular motifs and stylized floral details. The deep raspberry field sets a dramatic backdrop, while the stepped corner spandrels—executed in deep umber and charcoal—evoke mountain silhouettes or architectural forms.
Graphic latch-hook motifs and sinuous curves lend movement and tension to the piece, drawing the eye inward and outward in equal measure. The main border is adorned with a rare scrolling vine and rosette pattern, punctuated by geometric flourishes in celadon, ivory, and terracotta.
Hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, the rug has a dense, low pile with a soft, weighty handle. It is in excellent vintage condition, with vivid natural dyes and no notable wear.
